BP&P_ ZOHO CLIMATE PROOF DISTRICT

ZOHO is the pilot location for the implementation of the Rotterdam Adaptation Strategy on a district scale

The Zomerhofkwartier and Agniesebuurt are among the areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall, longer periods of drought and heat stress. After years of decline, local entrepreneurs, creative professionals and neighborhood associations have settled in ZoHo to experiment with re-programming the area and new ways of development. Climate Proof Zomerhofkwartier initiative combines the urban transformation with innovative resiliency measures based on the Rotterdam Adaptation Strategy. The process included a deep analysis of the district climate conditions and a series of workshops where Zomerhofkwartier inhabitants and professionals were working together to define specific strategies and a shared perspective to follow and willing to turn climate measures into added values for the district.

Climate Proof ZoHo shows the implementation of the Rotterdam Climate Adaptation Strategy on the district scale. For the coming years ZoHo has been pinpointed as the urban laboratory in Rotterdam where promising climate measures are combined with the urban transition and its local initiatives. Climate proof ZoHo aims to make the Zomerhofkwartier a more resilient and vital district at the same time. The challenges the ZoHo district is facing are threefold: increasing excessive rain events, longer periods of drought and more intense periods of heat stress. Each of them bearing their own characteristics.
